Kurt Schwitters Commission

This project was so interesting, we've documented the process from end-to-end.  Our customer wanted a pair of panels for his front door in the style of one of Kurt Schwitters' paintings, to match the rest of the house.  In addition, his pattern included L-shaped pieces - which are difficult to cut, and suffer from stress when in place - but we love a challenge in glass.

The Brief

Picture
The inspiration is in the centre; customer's designs on either side; and the pattern of the door on the far right.

Pattern for the left panel

Here's the pattern for cutting and constructing one of the panels to the exact size with allowance for the lead.

Under construction

After cutting glass to the pattern, the panel is built up from the bottom corner. (The lines really are straight - the curves are only in the photo!)

The finished articles

As ever, our photographic skills can't capture the colours and textures of the glass - but the customer was delighted with the result.  Schwitters was interesting; Mondrian might have been easier to emulate; but we're definitely not trying for Jackson Pollock's ation paintings in the near future.
